Why Are Horror Movies So Gay?

Horror has always been more than just jump scares and monsters. For many queer people, it’s been a place to see themselves, to find power in what others call “monstrous,” and to turn fear into freedom.

From the queer-coded villains of early cinema to the unapologetically queer characters leading horror today, the genre has long reflected the communities fears, desires and resilience.

As queerness moves further into the mainstream, we’re left asking: has horror lost its radical edge, or simply evolved with us?

50 Years of SNL: The Most Iconic Queer Sketches

From the very first seasons to today’s internet-breaking moments, Saturday Night Live has a long history of queer representation. As the renowned comedy institution celebrates 50 years of on-screen hilarity, we’re taking a look back at some of the most groundbreaking queer moments which, for better or worse, made it to the SNL stage. In October 1975, SNL first premiered on American screens and, with it, debuted its first ever queer musical guest, Janis Ian. Although she wouldn’t come out as gay for another 18 years, SNL made queer history in its very first episode.
